The Tikkun Olam Committee is hoping to get everyone more involved with volunteering in the community by setting up some “field trips” to volunteer at different organizations.
The first organization we will volunteer with will be Denton County Friends of the Family. We will volunteer at the thrift store sorting donations and anything else they might need. If we get more than 10 volunteers, we will add more times because we can only have 10 at a time. Anyone middle school age and up can volunteer.
If you would like to volunteer please click the link below and fill out the background check form before February 22 so they will have time to check it before we go in. Please also RSVP with Sarah McCrory so we can keep track of how many people are going.
The event will be March 2 at 2:00.

The Tikkun Olam Committee proudly presents its 4th annual HOUSEWARES DRIVE to benefit Friends of the Family! We will be accepting donations of new or gently used essential housewares. These items will be given to families moving out of the DCFoF emergency shelter and into new, safe homes. Last year CKA’s donations stocked an entire shed at the shelter, but that shed is empty now and all those donations are being used by families. Time to fill it up again! The drive will run from April 8th-May 6th.
The staff at the shelter have asked for the following items:
–Pot & Pans
–Dish soap & sponges
–Brooms & Dustpans
–Mops and Buckets
–Sheet Sets (Twin, Full, Queen)
–Comforter Sets (Twin, Full, Queen)
If you have other donations you would like to make to Friends of the Family such as clothing or furniture, please contact their outreach office directly at 940-382-7273.
It’s been a great couple of months for Tikkun Olam.
We donated about 90 bags of food to Jewish Family Services and Denton County Friends of the Family with our High Holy Day Food Drive. This congregation is awesome! Thank you so much for your donations!!
We also gave out 41 flu shots at our flu clinic on October 15. Thank you to Mary Teague with Texas Health Resources for helping to make that happen for us. You may have seen a post on Facebook with a link to a survey. Texas Health Resources offers many other programs that we can take advantage of. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey so that we can get an idea of what services would best serve our community. In case you missed it, here is the link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KolAmi2017
In other Tikkun Olam news, you may have noticed a new shelving unit next to the water fountains. This is our brand new donation center! We are collecting donations for our continuous drives: pill bottles, toiletries (travel and full size), winter gear (gloves, scarves, hats, coats, and especially socks), children’s books (non-religious for DCFOF), plastic grocery bags, and feminine hygiene products.
If you have any suggestions for Tikkun Olam or would like to join our committee, please feel free to contact me firstname.lastname@example.org.
High Holy Day Food Drive
Paper bags will be handed out immediately following the Rosh Hashannah evening service. Please be sure to pick one up. If you do not come to the evening service, they will be available in the lobby for the morning service as well. Please bring the back by Yom Kippur. The majority of the food will be donated to JFS, with about 5 bags pulled for specific items needed by Denton County Friends of the Family.
There will be a flu shot clinic at CKA during religious school on October 15.
Please remember that CKA hosts the following ongoing drives throughout the year: empty medicine bottles (please remove labels), winter gear, plastic grocery bags and mini toiletries. Coming soon-there will be some shelving added right next to the water fountains to house these donations.
