Heartfelt Haftarah

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Vayikra
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on March 23, 2023 at 11:00 am

This week’s episode is a little longer than usual, but that is only because it is filled with so much good stuff. Our haftarah this week is from Isaiah 43 and 44. The Rabbi covers the context of the book of Isaiah and the current thinking about its construction. He reviews Isaiah’s wisdom on the real importance of sacrifice and it certainly isn’t animal. And tons more… Please Note: The text version of the verses used in Heartfelt Haftarah are from the “JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh The Traditional Hebrew Text and New JPS Translation” – 2nd Edition The verses read aloud are from a different translation and will vary slightly at times.

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Vayakhel-Pekudei
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on March 16, 2023 at 11:00 am

The haftarah for this week’s double portion, Vayakhel-Pekudei, comes from Ezekiel. It addresses Ezekiel’s vision for Jerusalem. Rabbi Dennis examines this vision, its reality, and the metaphor for our lives it provides.

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Ki Tisa
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on March 9, 2023 at 12:00 pm

This week the haftarah is all about Elijah. Join Rabbi Dennis for an informative and enlightening discussion on Elijah, miracles, and his ongoing association with so many traditions in Judaism.

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Tetzaveh
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on March 2, 2023 at 12:00 pm

This week is all about the temple. The parasha, Tetzaveh, and the haftarah from Ezekiel both discuss the vestments of the priest and details and design of the 1st and future temples. Ultimately, it speaks to our idea of hope as the Rabbi will explain. Please note: For 5783, the upcoming shabbat is Shabbat Zachor. It is because this is the shabbat just prior to Purim. For Shabbat Zachor, we revisit the story of the Amaleks. When Shabbat Zachor occurs, the haftarah switches to Samuel I 15:1-34. However, for our discussion, the Rabbi chose to use the haftarah from a typical cycle where the upcoming shabbat is not Shabbat Zachor. In those case, the haftarah is the one shown above from Ezekiel.

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Terumah
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on February 23, 2023 at 12:00 pm

Learn about Solomon and the building of the Temple in this week’s haftarah. It ties to the discussion of building the Mishkan in this week’s pariahs, Terumah. Learn all about the ancient Temple and its significance in both ancient and modern times.

  • Heartfelt Haftarah – Mishpatim
by Congregation Kol Ami – Flower Mound, Texas on February 16, 2023 at 6:08 pm

This week, the Rabbi looks at the haftarah for Mishpatim from Jeremiah 34. He discusses the background of Jeremiah, the situation in the ancient world at the time of the writing of the haftarah, and its implications about honoring our commitments and oaths. He even expands it into a discussion of Jewish wedding traditions. This is one not to be missed! The Rabbi discusses the “normal” haftarah for this week rather than the actual haftarah from II Kings. This weekend is a special shabbat; it is Shabbat Shekalim. So, on the calendar for 5783, we have a special haftarah from II Kings related to that. However, the Rabbi chose to stick with the one that occurs on a typical calendar year. Here are a couple of links to learn more about Shabbat Shekalim and its related haftarah: https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/haftarah-shekalim/ https://www.hebcal.com/holidays/shabbat-shekalim Please Note: The text version of the verses used in Heartfelt Haftarah are from the “JPS Hebrew-English Tanakh The Traditional Hebrew Text and New JPS Translation” – 2nd Edition The verses read aloud are from a different translation and will vary slightly at times.
